Annual Fundraiser
A thriving horse facility for kids in the middle of gang-infested Compton? Sounds like fiction but it is fact. Beginning in 1988, Mayisha Akbar, with the help of her family, bought up 3 properties in a little known rural area of Compton called Richland Farms. Akbar converted their back yards into a mini-ranch which has served for 20 years as home for many rescued horses and a year-round equestrian program for hundreds of children between the ages of 5-20.
Jr. Posse members have participated in horse shows all over Southern California opening their eyes to life outside the invisible walls of the inner city. Students develop discipline, responsibility, increased self-esteem, and communication skills.
The mission this year is to establish the first inner city high school equestrian team and charter school. Students would then become eligible for numerous equestrian scholarships available across the country. Raising funds for this program will also make it possible to increase the number of children served and make a significant difference in reducing the appeal of gang life.
In order to help make this happen, Akbar and her rapidly growing team of volunteers have organized a Fundraiser on May 30, 2009 in the Grand Ballroom of the Los Angeles Equestrian Center in Burbank, beginning at 5.00 p.m. Don’t miss out! Get your tickets early! Last year was sold out.

Regional Experiences are open to exhibitors and owners residing in the respective states or provinces comprising the 11 AQHA regions. Each exhibitor must be a current AQHA member and all horses must be AQHA registered. You or your horse cannot show the same class in any division (novice youth, youth, novice amateur, amateur, amateur select or open) at a Regional Experience that you placed in the top 10 in the preceding calendar year’s FedEx Open, Bank of America Amateur, Bayer Select or Ford AQHYA World Championship Shows. Additionally, horses or people who might advance to another class because of age and have placed in the top 10 at one of AQHA’s world shows cannot enter the same class at the regional level.
But these events aren’t just about competition. At each of the events, which are managed by the AQHA state, provincial or international affiliates in each region, exhibitors and visitors can attend educational seminars and clinics, shop at a trade show and socialize with fellow American Quarter Horse enthusiasts. For those who do compete, more than $135,000 in prizes is up for grabs! Go to www.aqha.com/association/experience/prizes.html
Equine Semen Freezing On The Rise
With the currant economic slow down, affecting everything from new cars sales to horse sales, one thing that seems to be on the rise in equine breeding is storing a stallion’s semen by freezing it. Equine Reproduction Centers located in La Cresta Murrieta has seen a marked increase in requests for banking stallion frozen semen and embryo transfers, where an embryo is taken from one mare and transferred into another. Diana Humphries owner of Equine Reproduction Centers (ERC) said that although sales of horses are a little slower at the moment, many mare owners are looking ahead and realizing that while others maybe holding off breeding this season, now is a great time to breed. Breeding this season will of course result in a foal next year and it will be three years from now before they are going to have the two year old they want, we are seeing an increase in reasonable and good quality breeding through embryo transfer.
Stallion owners that are unsure of whether to stand their stallions are also opting to freeze their stallion semen. Some want to avoid the rush to collect when the mare owner calls with the news that their mare is ready. By having the semen frozen and stored at a location such as ERC, the stallion owner can take the booking for the stallion and ERC can simply ship the semen when the mare owner is ready. Diana Humphries also said that the largest increase in requests this year are from stallion owners that want to freeze their stallion in case of injury, death, or just loss of ownership where the frozen semen gives them more options at a later date. AQHA has approved the use of frozen semen even after the stallion is sold or has passed away.
