Question: I have 2 horses (25 yrs and 12yrs) that have become inseparable.  The both freak out when they can't see each other.  The 12yr old rears and goes dangerously uncontrollable if he can't see the older horse.  It is to the point that I fear him and so I haven't ridden him.  I don't have an area to really separate them, they are pastured together.  I have taken the 12 yr old away to do some ground work but he does not pay attention to me.  Any suggestions?

Q & A with Richard Winters

Q: OK Mr. Winters, I need your knowledge and insight, I have a 6 year old Arab mare that just doesn’t understand to stand while I mount. I did find when she had another horse boxing her in, she was perfect, so I suspect it’s lack of understanding and nerves on her part. My old books say to have a helper hold her. I need for us to be independent from others. Any training ideas would be helpful!                              Kerry Johnson

Every time I even try to get close to my mare with clipper she strikes at me... any training suggestions?

Here is the first thing to understand when dealing with your situation: From your horse’s perspective the reaction of striking out, due to being fearful, is not that unreasonable. Clippers have a loud irritating noise and a strange artificial feel when touching their body. Every horse is different. Some horses are relatively comfortable with clippers from the very first introduction and others require a tremendous amount of desensitization to help them overcome their fear.

Question: I have a 4 year QH mare who has always been lazy, even when very young. She does great on ground work and was started using your methods. She is fine to lunge but under saddle it is difficult to get, and keep, her moving. “Spanking” and a crop just make her pin her ears and go slower, but gentle spurs seem to do the trick. Can you recommend exercises to get her more invested in working together as a team and keeping her concentration on the work I ask of her? She seems distracted a large part of the time, and just wants to mosey along on her terms. Thank you! Joanne

Question:

My 12-year-old quarter horse mare is very sensitive to the girth being tightened. When I even attempt to start fastening it she kicks with her back leg. I am very careful to tighten the girth slowly… I will put it on the loosest hole for a minute and then tighten to the next hole, etc but she still does this. I have tried everything to get her to stop. It has become a danger to me and to anyone who might be walking by. Can you give me some tips on how to train her out of this?

Thank you, Kara
